Quick answer

The Maracanã stands in the Maracanã district, near downtown Rio de Janeiro. Lance says the metro station called Maracanã is a few metres from the stadium and serves gates A, B and C. The tour box office is at Gate A, so head for that letter and have your voucher ready on a phone or on paper.

The address on the booking page is Rua Professor Eurico Rabelo 219, in Rio's Maracanã district. Wikipedia describes the stadium as located in that district, near downtown. Put the address into a map app before you set off, and add the gate letter to the destination if the app allows, because the stadium complex is large and its entrances are spread around it.

The metro and the train

Lance, a Brazilian sports site, says the metro station called Maracanã is only a few metres from the stadium and gives access to gates A, B and C, while a second station, São Cristóvão, serves other gates. It adds that the suburban train also stops at Maracanã. Line numbers and timetables change, so this guide leaves them out. Ask your hotel desk or check a map app for the current route from where you are staying.

Why the gate letter matters

The booking page says to present your voucher at the tour box office, located at Gate A. A reviewer on the page, who gave five stars, warns to go to the right point, the entrance next to Gate A. The page's review summary also says some travellers wanted clearer directions to the start. The lesson is simple: the stadium has many entrances and most are for match crowds, so find the gate letter on the sign before you join any queue.

Arriving by car or app

A Brazilian travel blog says pedestrians enter the tour at Gate A, while drivers use a parking area at another gate on the Radial Oeste road, and that parking for tour visitors is a paid extra. One reviewer on the booking page took a ride-hailing car from Copacabana. If you use an app, set the pick-up and drop-off point with the gate letter in mind, and expect the same road to be busy on match days.

Match days change everything

The blog says the visit closes several hours before kick-off on match days, and that the exact time depends on the fixture. On those days the streets around the stadium fill with supporters, and the entrances you use for the tour may be closed or redirected. If you can choose, plan your visit for a day with no home game, and read your confirmation again the evening before. The booking page says that if the operator cancels or reschedules you are offered a new date or a full refund.

Sensible habits in a big-city crowd

The usual rules for any busy city apply. Carry only what you need, keep your phone in a front pocket or a zipped bag when you are on the street, and keep the voucher on the phone so you are not searching through a bag at the gate. Use the metro station or a ride booked on an app, and look at the day's conditions before you set out. This is general guidance, not a claim about any one street.

Who this isn't for

If you would rather not navigate public transport or a large complex on your own, this tour is not an easy fit, because it includes no transfer. Consider a guided outing whose booking page lists transport, such as the match-day outing when a game is on, or the full-day city tour with pick-up, which passes the stadium on foot outside only. Both are described in the other guides on this site.
